The mystery of the old manuscripts and the story of the oak gall ink

Three art workshops took place last Tuesday in the kindergarten and primary school in Horka nad Moravou. For the children of the first, third and fifth grade we presented old manuscripts, the production of oak gall inkand the work of a scribe in the Middle Ages.

Together we discovered what the rare manuscripts of the historical library in Kroměříž hide, how a handwritten book was created and what a good scribe's workshop should contain. We uncovered the story of oak balls called "duběnky" in Czech, which took us back in time to the Middle Ages, when books were a rare treasure and artists drew their art materials only from nature.

We experimented with paint and tried preparing ink according to the recipes of the old masters and create writing instruments.
