At a recent workshop on the restoration, conservation and digitization of works on paper, we gained a lot of valuable information and inspiration.
The first part of the workshop focused on sharing best practices in restoring and conserving works of art before digitizing them. Jarmila Franková, an expert from the Archdiocesan Museum Kroměříž, shared her experience in the complex restoration of musical manuscripts and rare drawings.
The next speaker was David Frank, who presented the challenges associated with creating artistic facsimiles. Using the example of the Olomouc Horologium, which was a war booty of the Swedes and is now in Stockholm, he showed us how these unique replicas are created. It is amazing how facsimiles can bring the past to life!
Tomas Gul'ash introduced us to the issue of preserving collection items for digitization purposes. He gave us an interesting presentation on how digitization contributes to the preservation and accessibility of these precious artifacts for future generations.
The second part of the workshop was devoted to the digitization process itself. Jana Macháčková guided us through the digitization workplace in Kroměříž and presented in detail the digitization workflow and the presentation of the digitized items through the collection portal. In addition, she introduced us to the digitization module of the Museion filing system and the preparation of the collection portal that will allow the public to explore these gems.
